$552m HOPE‑EDU Programme Targets 29 Million Pupils, 500,000 Teachers Nationwide

By Erewunmi Peace

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the $552.18 million HOPE‑EDU programme, an ambitious initiative aimed at overhauling the country’s basic education system and improving learning outcomes nationwide.

The programme, a collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Education, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs), the World Bank, and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), will directly benefit 29 million pupils and approximately 500,000 teachers.

Key components of HOPE‑EDU include:

  • Teacher capacity building through training and mentorship programmes
  • Improved learning resources for pupils, including modern textbooks and teaching materials
  • Construction and rehabilitation of classrooms in underserved communities
  • Enhanced monitoring and evaluation to track learning outcomes

Officials emphasised that the programme aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to improve basic education and ensure equitable access to quality learning across all states. Transparency, accountability, and multi‑stakeholder engagement are central to the initiative’s implementation.

The Federal Government hopes the HOPE‑EDU programme will not only increase literacy and numeracy skills but also empower teachers and communities to sustain educational improvements in the long term.
