Health Workers Protest Controversial Reform Bills at National Assembly

By Erewunmi Peace

Health workers from various unions have staged a protest at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, opposing controversial Health Sector Executive Bills 2026 currently before lawmakers.

The demonstration was organised by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations, drawing participants from across the country. Protesters gathered at Unity Fountain, Maitama, before marching to the National Assembly to express their concerns.

According to union officials, the proposed legislation could alter existing professional structures, job roles, and welfare conditions for health workers nationwide. Organisers urged lawmakers to engage meaningfully with health sector stakeholders and reconsider key provisions of the bills.

The protest underscores growing tensions in Nigeria’s health sector, where professionals have previously raised concerns over pay, welfare, and reforms affecting their roles. Authorities have yet to respond officially to the demonstration.

The unions have also called on Nigerians to support their demand for a more inclusive and transparent review process of the proposed health sector reforms.
