Buhari’s Death and the Battle for 2027: A Political Turning Point?

By Erewunmi Peace

Just days before the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, July 13, 2025, Nigeria’s political landscape was already being stirred. Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, ignited a fresh debate over the political legacy and electoral power of the late president.

Speaking at the public presentation of “According to the President: Lessons From A Presidential Spokesman’s Experience” by Mallam Garba Shehu on July 9, Mustapha declared that President Bola Tinubu did not “make Buhari president in 2015.” He argued instead that Buhari already had over 12 million core supporters, suggesting the APC merger in 2015 contributed “only three million” to Buhari’s victory.

The claim, controversial and possibly political, now takes on greater significance in the wake of Buhari’s death — a loss President Tinubu honored with a seven-day national mourning, a state funeral, and a public holiday on July 15, the day Buhari was laid to rest in Daura, Katsina State.

Political Reverberations Ahead of 2027

The late Buhari, often referred to as “Mai Gaskiya” (The Honest One), was not just a former president and military general. He was a symbol of integrity for millions — especially in Northern Nigeria. His Spartan lifestyle, loyalty to party, and quiet support for Tinubu’s presidency until his death made him a central figure in the Tinubu-Buhari political alliance.

Now, with his passing, a scramble has begun within the political class to fill the void of Northern leadership. Key figures like Nasir el-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have made visible moves, visiting Daura to pay respects — or, as critics say, to position themselves as heirs to Buhari’s northern political base.

But analysts are divided. Some believe Buhari’s death could weaken Tinubu’s support in the North, while others argue it may strengthen Tinubu’s hand, freeing him to fully lead the APC coalition and consolidate power without deference to Buhari’s political shadow.

“The President must now assume full leadership of the Tinubu-Buhari alliance that produced the APC and led to both their victories,” writes Rahman, a Senior Assistant to the President.

Buhari’s Legacy and Tinubu’s Momentum

In an effort to further immortalize Buhari, President Tinubu announced the University of Maiduguri would now bear the late leader’s name. At home and abroad, Buhari’s passing is seen as the end of an era — one marked by discipline, humility, and service.

As the 2027 elections draw closer and opposition forces attempt to realign, Tinubu’s strategic response to Buhari’s absence — and how he manages the power struggle it has triggered — will likely define his political future.
