FCCPC Cautions Traders Against Price Inflation and Substandard Goods in Lagos Markets

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a strong warning to traders across Lagos markets against the artificial inflation of prices and the sale of substandard or counterfeit products.
During an enforcement exercise on Tuesday, FCCPC officials visited major markets including Mile 12 and Alaba International Market. The operation, led by Bridget Etim, the Director of Surveillance and Enforcement, revealed a range of consumer rights violations, including manipulation of product scales, tampering with expiry dates, rebagging of expired food items such as rice, and deceptive labelling of imported electronics as “Tokunbo” (used) when they are in fact faulty.
Etim emphasized that such practices are in direct violation of Nigeria’s consumer protection laws and urged traders to prioritize fairness and transparency in their dealings.
“We observed that traders deliberately exploit consumers through price-fixing, falsified measurements, and fake warranties. These acts will no longer be tolerated,” she stated.
The Commission assured that offenders would face prosecution and that regular surveillance would continue across major markets to ensure full compliance.
FCCPC’s warning comes amid growing public concern over the rising cost of living and the proliferation of fake goods in Nigerian markets.
Traders are now being advised to operate within the law, as the Commission intensifies efforts to protect consumer rights and promote fair market competition.
