Lagos Reduces Prices of Rice, Beans, Garri, and Other Essentials Ahead of Christmas

By Erewunmi Peace

The Lagos State Government has announced a significant reduction in the prices of staple food items, including rice, beans, garri, bread, and pepper, as the Christmas season approaches. The move is aimed at easing the financial burden on households during the festive period.

Reports indicate that in several Lagos markets, the price of a 50 kg bag of rice has dropped from approximately ₦85,000 earlier in the year to between ₦60,000–₦70,000 in some areas. The reduction is attributed to the state’s “Ounje Eko” farmers’ subsidy programme, improved local food production, and enhanced supply chain measures.

The Lagos State Government stated that the initiative is part of its broader food system reforms, designed to stabilize prices, improve access to essential food items, and ensure affordable nutrition for residents across the state.

Market observers have welcomed the intervention, noting that while the subsidy is expected to provide immediate relief, the long-term success will depend on consistent supply and effective implementation.
