NAFDAC Begins Clampdown on Sachet Alcohol, Cites Risks to Children and Youth

By Erewunmi Peace

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has commenced a nationwide clampdown on the production, distribution, and sale of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small bottles, citing serious public health concerns.

According to NAFDAC, the move is aimed at protecting children and young people from the dangers of alcohol abuse, as sachet alcohol products are cheap, easily accessible, and often consumed without regulation.

Speaking on the enforcement exercise, the agency explained that the widespread availability of high-alcohol-content drinks in sachets has contributed to increased misuse among minors and youths, raising concerns about long-term health, safety, and social consequences.

NAFDAC noted that the enforcement follows regulatory approvals and directives to fully implement restrictions on alcohol products packaged in sachets and small containers, particularly those below approved volume limits.

The agency warned manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to comply strictly with existing regulations, stressing that violators would face sanctions, seizure of products, and possible prosecution.

Public health experts have welcomed the clampdown, describing it as a necessary step toward reducing alcohol abuse and safeguarding vulnerable groups in society.

NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all regulated products in Nigeria meet safety standards and do not pose risks to public health.
