Oyetola: I’m Not Contesting Osun Governorship Election in 2026

By Erewunmi Peace

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and former Governor of Osun State, Adegboyega Oyetola, has officially declared that he will not be contesting the 2026 governorship election in the state.

Oyetola made this announcement during a strategic meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Osogbo, where he addressed concerns surrounding the party’s direction ahead of the next gubernatorial race.

“Let me state it clearly today — I will not be contesting the 2026 governorship election,” Oyetola affirmed. “The future of Osun APC lies in our unity, discipline, and ability to support the next generation of leaders.”

The statement puts to rest months of speculation regarding a possible comeback bid by the former governor, who served from 2018 to 2022 and was unseated by Governor Ademola Adeleke in the last election.

Despite internal party sentiments that he remains a strong candidate, Oyetola emphasized the importance of giving room for new aspirants and reaffirmed his commitment to party building.

“My focus is to strengthen the APC, not to create divisions. Let all aspirants begin consultations, but let us not lose sight of unity and discipline,” he urged.

Oyetola’s decision is expected to shape the internal dynamics of the APC in Osun State, with several aspirants now preparing to throw their hats into the ring. Party insiders believe his exit from the race could open doors for younger politicians under his mentorship.

The APC in Osun is expected to begin its official nomination process in the first quarter of 2026.
