Panic as Lagos Public School Building Collapses in Ikorodu

By Erewunmi Peace

Panic erupted in Ikorodu, Lagos State, after a classroom block at Odokekere High School partially collapsed recently.

The incident caused alarm among residents and parents, though it occurred mostly after school hours.
Authorities confirmed that no fatalities or serious injuries were reported.

Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), were promptly on the scene to secure the area and ensure public safety.

The collapsed block had already been marked for demolition as part of planned renovations, according to state officials. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu directed the immediate relocation of affected students to nearby schools to prevent any disruption to their education.

“This is an unfortunate incident, but we are grateful that no students or teachers were seriously hurt,” the governor said.

The collapse has reignited concerns about school infrastructure safety in Lagos State, with calls for more proactive maintenance and stricter monitoring of public buildings to prevent similar accidents in the future.

Residents and parents have been urged to remain calm while the government continues investigations and takes steps to reinforce the safety of school facilities across the state.
