By Erewunmi Peace

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the passing of Olusegun “Segun” Awolowo, the grandson of the late Yoruba political icon, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, describing his death as “tragic and deeply painful.”

Segun Awolowo, a former Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), died on Thursday at the age of 62.

In a condolence message released by the State House, President Tinubu expressed sadness over the loss, noting that Segun Awolowo embodied the values and pedigree of the Awolowo family.

The President said the deceased was “a dedicated public servant who served Nigeria with honour, dignity, and a strong commitment to truth and justice, much like his grandfather.”

Tinubu highlighted Segun Awolowo’s contributions to national economic development, especially his leadership at the NEPC, where he championed export diversification and promoted the “Zero Oil Plan” as part of efforts to boost non-oil revenue.

He extended his condolences to the Awolowo family, particularly Segun’s wife, children, and mother, as well as the people of Ogun State and the South-West region.

President Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of Segun Awolowo’s soul and urged the family to find strength in his impactful legacy and distinguished service to the nation.
