The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has clarified the current status of the presidential pardon list, emphasizing that approvals are still under final review.
In a statement released on October 16, 2025, Fagbemi assured the public that no inmate has yet been released under President Bola Tinubu’s exercise of the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy. He explained that the process is at its final stage, which involves a thorough review to ensure all names and recommendations comply with established legal and procedural requirements before any instrument of release is issued.
Fagbemi noted that following approval by the Council of State, the next step is the issuance of the formal instrument implementing the President’s decision for each beneficiary. This step allows for a final verification of the list to ensure accuracy and propriety before forwarding it to the Controller-General of Corrections for action.
The Attorney-General emphasized that there is no delay in the process; it is simply following due legal procedure to ensure that only qualified individuals benefit from the President’s clemency. He also appreciated the public’s vigilance, describing it as a reflection of Nigerians’ commitment to justice and good governance.
