By Erewunmi Peace

Tragedy struck in Akwa Ibom State after a Nigerian Army medical officer, Lieutenant Dr. Samson Haruna, was reportedly set ablaze by his wife, identified as Mrs. Haruna, following a domestic dispute. The young officer later succumbed to severe burns sustained during the attack.

According to multiple reports, the incident occurred in Calabar Road Barracks, Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo, where the couple resided. Witnesses said the wife allegedly doused her husband with petrol while he was asleep before setting him on fire. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though sources close to the family linked it to recurring marital disagreements.

Lieutenant Haruna, a medical doctor attached to the Nigerian Army Medical Corps, was rushed to a nearby hospital but was confirmed dead days later due to the extent of his injuries. The couple had reportedly been married for only five months before the tragic event.

Confirming the incident, the Nigerian Army Headquarters described the officer’s death as “painful and deeply regrettable,” adding that an official investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

“The Nigerian Army is saddened by the untimely death of one of our medical officers, Lt. Dr. Haruna. The case is being thoroughly investigated, and justice will be ensured,” the Army stated in a press release.

Residents of the barracks and colleagues of the deceased expressed shock over the incident, describing the late officer as “humble, intelligent, and dedicated to service.”

Human rights groups and social commentators have since taken to social media to condemn the act and call for stronger awareness around domestic violence and mental health in military families.

As of the time of filing this report, the wife is said to be in custody, assisting with ongoing investigations by the Military Police in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.

The Nigerian Army has urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue and reiterated its commitment to upholding discipline and justice within its ranks.
