Germany praises Tinubu for reviving $2.3bn Siemens Power Deal Abandoned by Buhari

Germany’s Deputy Head of Mission to Nigeria, Mr. Johannes Lehne, has stated that the $2.3 billion Siemens power deal signed during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration remained largely dormant until President Bola Tinubu’s government revived it.
Speaking at the Sub-Saharan Africa International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (SAIPEC) in Lagos, Lehne said the partnership — part of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) — stalled in its implementation during the latter years of Buhari’s tenure but has gained renewed momentum under the Tinubu administration.
The Siemens deal is aimed at revamping Nigeria’s electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure, improving available power capacity, and supporting the country’s ongoing energy sector reforms.
The German official emphasized that while the project was not entirely abandoned, progress had been slow until recent interventions.
This development highlights the current administration’s commitment to accelerating critical power sector projects and strengthening international collaborations to ensure Nigeria meets its energy infrastructure goals.
