Bashir El-Rufai Apologizes to VP Shettima Over ‘Spineless’ Remark

By Erewunmi Peace

Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has issued a public apology to Vice President Kashim Shettima following a controversial remark in which he described the nation’s number two citizen as “spineless.”

The comment, which was shared on social media earlier in March, sparked widespread criticism from political observers and members of the public, who described it as disrespectful and inappropriate.

In a statement released on Sunday, Bashir acknowledged that his comment was “reckless” and expressed regret over the choice of words. He noted that he holds the Vice President in high regard and did not intend to undermine his office.

“I wish to sincerely apologize to His Excellency, Vice President Kashim Shettima, for my earlier statement. It was made in poor judgment and does not reflect my respect for his person and office,” he said.

The apology comes after mounting backlash online, with many calling for a retraction and urging public figures to maintain decorum in political discourse.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Vice President’s office regarding the apology.

The incident highlights the growing influence of social media in shaping political conversations and the importance of responsible communication by public figures.
