Renowned NTA Newscaster Hauwa Yusuf Dies in the UK

The Nigerian media community is in mourning following the death of Hauwa Yusuf, a respected veteran broadcaster with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). She passed away in the United Kingdom on Thursday, June 26, after a brief illness.
Hauwa Yusuf, who made her mark as a pioneering newscaster and international correspondent, was widely regarded for her elegance, depth of reporting, and dedication to the journalism profession. She was NTA International’s first Europe correspondent and a familiar face to millions of Nigerians during her years on screen.
The news of her passing was confirmed by the Central Association of Nigerians in the United Kingdom (CANUK), which praised her immense contributions to the Nigerian diaspora community and her efforts in championing women’s and youth development.
A funeral prayer was held at the East London Mosque, attended by close family, friends, and members of the Nigerian community in the UK. Emotional tributes poured in from colleagues, civil society leaders, and former students who described her as “a voice of integrity” and “a pillar of professionalism.”
Born in Funtua, Katsina State, Hauwa Yusuf’s career spanned over three decades, during which she reported on numerous international events and summit meetings. Beyond journalism, she was also an active community leader and the President of the Arewa Women’s League in the UK.
“Hauwa was more than just a broadcaster — she was a mentor, a patriot, and a voice for many who had none,” said CANUK Chairman Ayo Akinfe. “Her legacy will live on in the generations of women journalists she inspired.”
She is survived by her children, extended family, and a legacy that continues to inspire journalists across the globe.
