Supreme Court Holds Final Say on Emir Sanusi’s Status – Kano Government

By Damilola Adeleke

KANO – The Kano State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Haruna Isa Dederi, has reaffirmed that only the Supreme Court can make a final ruling on the emirship dispute involving Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Dederi clarified that the recent Court of Appeal judgment did not overturn Sanusi’s reinstatement as the 16th Emir of Kano. Instead, the ruling maintained the status quo, pending the Supreme Court’s verdict.

The legal battle was reignited after Aminu Baba DanAgundi, a kingmaker loyal to the deposed 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, filed for a stay of execution. A three-member panel of the Court of Appeal, led by Justice Abang, ruled in favor of the application, ensuring the matter remains unresolved until the Supreme Court delivers its final decision.

Dederi emphasized that the state government acted within its authority by reinstating Sanusi, as confirmed by the Court of Appeal’s initial ruling on January 10, 2025, which nullified a Federal High Court decision against Sanusi’s return. However, with DanAgundi’s appeal now before the Supreme Court, the final judgment rests with the apex court.
