Nigeria Generates 32 Million Tonnes of Solid Waste Annually — NACCIMA
By Erewunmi Peace
Nigeria produces more than 32 million tonnes of solid waste every year, the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has revealed.
Speaking on Monday at a stakeholders’ interactive session in Abuja, Sola Obadimu, NACCIMA’s Director-General, highlighted the urgent need for improved waste management and cleaner production techniques to reduce the environmental impact.
The event was organised by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), and the Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production project.
Obadimu noted that a significant portion of Nigeria’s waste comes from industrial activities, and much of it could be better managed through sustainable production and energy efficiency initiatives. Experts say tackling this growing waste problem is critical for environmental sustainability and public health.
