Lagos Targets 50,000 Residents in Ambitious Digital Skills Programme

By Erewunmi Peace

The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to train no fewer than 50,000 residents in digital and technical skills as part of efforts to boost employment and position the state for global competitiveness.

The initiative was announced by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, during the Lagos Economic Development Update (LEDU) 2026.

According to Hamzat, the programme is designed to equip residents with in-demand skills such as software development, cybersecurity, and other technology-driven competencies required in today’s global economy.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the state’s broader vision of transitioning from an infrastructure-driven economy to a knowledge-based one, where human capital development plays a central role.

The Lagos State Government emphasized that the training programme is part of its long-term development strategy aimed at reducing unemployment and creating opportunities for youths and professionals across various sectors.

While specific rollout timelines and implementation details are yet to be fully disclosed, the government assured that the initiative will be executed in phases to ensure effectiveness and broad participation.

Stakeholders have described the move as a step in the right direction, particularly at a time when digital skills are increasingly becoming essential for economic growth and global relevance.
