Maritime Workers Raise Alarm Over Missing Tally Clerks, Vessel Attacks at Nigerian Ports

By Erewunmi Peace

The Maritime Workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has raised serious concerns over operational and security challenges affecting activities at the nation’s seaports.

According to the union, the absence of tally clerks—officials responsible for monitoring and recording cargo—has created loopholes that could lead to revenue losses and poor accountability in cargo handling.

MWUN also highlighted the lack of adequate gangway security personnel at port terminals, warning that the situation exposes vessels and port users to potential risks.

The union further expressed concern over reported cases of attacks on vessels, including incidents occurring even after ships have berthed at Nigerian ports. These developments, they say, point to growing security lapses within the maritime sector.

Maritime workers are now calling on the Federal Government and relevant authorities to urgently address these issues by reinstating proper monitoring systems and strengthening security measures across the ports.

They emphasized that failure to act could undermine trade operations, reduce investor confidence, and affect Nigeria’s maritime revenue.

The union urged swift intervention to restore order, improve safety, and ensure transparency in port operations.
