FG Declares ASUU Strike Issue “Permanently Over” Following New Agreement
By Erewunmi Peace
The Federal Government (FG) has stated that the long-standing issue of strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) could be permanently resolved following a newly negotiated agreement with the union.
The agreement, reached between the FG and ASUU, addresses key concerns raised by university lecturers, including welfare improvements, salary adjustments, and other benefits. Education officials said the deal is expected to ensure uninterrupted academic activities in Nigerian universities.
Speaking on the development, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized that the government’s commitment to implementing the agreement should significantly reduce the likelihood of future industrial action by university staff.
While the government has expressed optimism, experts note that the long-term success of the agreement will depend on timely implementation of all provisions. ASUU has previously threatened to resume strikes if promised benefits are delayed or not fully delivered.
The FG’s announcement aims to reassure students, parents, and educators that Nigerian universities are moving toward a more stable academic calendar and continuous learning.
