Senate President Akpabio Declares Three Senate Seats Vacant, Orders By-Elections

By Erewunmi Peace

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has officially declared three Senate seats vacant following the deaths of the lawmakers representing them. The affected constituencies are Enugu North, Nasarawa North, and Rivers South-East.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, Akpabio directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct by-elections in line with constitutional requirements to fill the vacancies and ensure continuous representation for the affected constituencies.

Political parties are now preparing to contest the upcoming by-elections, which are expected to take place within the timeframe stipulated by law. Senate officials emphasized that the declaration and subsequent by-elections are part of the legislative process to maintain governance continuity and uphold constitutional provisions.

This move highlights the importance of maintaining full representation in the National Assembly, ensuring that citizens’ voices are heard and their interests represented at the federal level.
