Lawmakers Protest as Speaker Okays Review of Electoral Act Amendment Bill
By Erewunmi Peace
Tension erupted in the House of Representatives on Tuesday after the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, approved a motion seeking to review the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill.
The development triggered protests from several lawmakers, resulting in a heated and rowdy session inside the green chamber.
The controversy began when a motion was moved to rescind an earlier decision on the Electoral Act amendment and recommit the bill for further legislative consideration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
When the Speaker put the motion to a voice vote, some members strongly objected, arguing that the decision required broader consensus.
The disagreement quickly escalated, with lawmakers raising their voices in protest.
Division in the Chamber
While supporters of the motion maintained that revisiting the bill was necessary to address critical concerns, opponents described the move as unnecessary and potentially disruptive to electoral reforms already agreed upon.
As tensions intensified, the Speaker reportedly moved proceedings into a closed-door session to restore order and allow for further deliberations.
The Electoral Act plays a central role in regulating Nigeria’s electoral process.
Any review or amendment to the legislation carries significant implications for political parties, candidates, and preparations for future elections.
More details are expected as deliberations continue.
