NDLEA’s Global Recognition at UK Maritime Security Conference Excites Marwa

By Erewunmi Peace

The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mohammed Buba Marwa, has expressed satisfaction over the agency’s growing international recognition following its participation in a major maritime security conference in the United Kingdom.

Marwa described the development as a significant milestone for Nigeria’s anti-narcotics efforts, noting that the invitation to the high-level meeting reflects the increasing global relevance of the NDLEA.

The conference, known as the North Sea and Channel Maritime Information Group meeting, brought together key maritime security and law enforcement agencies, particularly from the United Kingdom and across Europe.

According to Marwa, the participation of NDLEA officials provided a valuable opportunity for collaboration, intelligence sharing, and exposure to advanced strategies in combating drug trafficking through maritime routes.

He further revealed that NDLEA officers were involved in joint operations and engagements with international partners, including the UK Border Force, as part of efforts to strengthen global cooperation against transnational drug crimes.

Marwa emphasized that Nigeria’s presence at the conference underscores the agency’s improving operational capacity and professionalism, adding that it also signals growing confidence in the country’s role in global counter-narcotics initiatives.

He noted that the knowledge and experience gained from the engagement would enhance the NDLEA’s effectiveness in tackling drug trafficking, particularly along maritime corridors, which remain critical routes for illicit drug movement.

While describing the recognition as encouraging, Marwa reiterated the agency’s commitment to sustaining its efforts in combating drug abuse and trafficking both within Nigeria and across international borders.

The development marks another step in NDLEA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen partnerships with global institutions and improve its operational strategies in addressing the challenges of drug-related crimes.
