The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has appointed Nigeria’s former Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo, as Senior Strategic Adviser to its Director-General, Jean Kaseya.
The appointment, announced on Monday, comes at a critical time as the agency advances its Africa Health Security and Sovereignty (AHSS) agenda. This initiative focuses on strengthening the continent’s influence in global health, increasing domestic healthcare financing, and boosting local production of essential medical supplies.
According to the agency, Osinbajo will provide strategic guidance to support Africa CDC’s mission of building resilient health systems and improving preparedness for future pandemics.
His role is also expected to contribute to efforts aimed at enhancing collaboration among African nations and positioning the continent as a stronger voice in global health governance.
Osinbajo, who served as Nigeria’s Vice-President from 2015 to 2023, brings extensive experience in governance, policy development, and international engagement. His appointment is seen as a significant step in reinforcing Africa CDC’s leadership capacity as it tackles emerging health challenges across the continent.
The Director-General of Africa CDC, Jean Kaseya, noted that the appointment aligns with the agency’s long-term vision of achieving a self-reliant and health-secure Africa.
