FBI Warns iPhone and Android Users About Risks From Certain Foreign Apps

By Erewunmi Peace

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a cybersecurity advisory warning iPhone and Android users about potential risks linked to certain foreign-developed mobile applications. While the alert does not ban any specific apps, it highlights serious privacy and data security concerns.

According to the FBI, some apps, particularly those developed outside the United States, may collect and store sensitive user data in ways that could expose it to foreign governments. This includes contact lists, personal identifiers, and other private information.

The advisory is especially focused on apps developed in countries with different national-security regulations, such as China.

The FBI emphasized that users should exercise caution when downloading and using these apps. Key recommendations include:

  • Download apps only from official stores like the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  • Review app permissions carefully and avoid granting access to unnecessary data.
  • Stay informed about how apps handle and store personal information.

Cybersecurity experts say that while not all foreign apps are dangerous, understanding how apps collect and share data is critical in protecting personal privacy.

This warning serves as a reminder that mobile security is not just about malware — data privacy and government access are increasingly important concerns in today’s digital world.
