Al‑Makura Claims Presidential Allocation to States Has Increased Sixfold, But Data Tells a Different Story

By Erewunmi Peace

Former Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al‑Makura recently stated that the amount of money the President gives to states is six times higher than it was two years ago. His comments have stirred discussion online and among the public.

However, official data shows a more nuanced picture. According to federal allocation records, FAAC (Federation Account Allocation Committee) disbursements to states have increased by approximately 60–70% in the last two years — a significant rise, but far from the sixfold increase suggested.

The rise in allocations is attributed to factors such as increased revenue from oil, improved VAT collections, and adjustments following fuel subsidy removal. Analysts caution that while allocations have grown, describing them as “six times more” is misleading.

Experts emphasize the importance of accurate reporting, noting that misrepresenting figures can create unnecessary confusion among citizens and policymakers.
