INEC Suspends Planned Voter Revalidation Exercise Nationwide

By Erewunmi Peace

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has directed all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) across the country to immediately suspend plans for the proposed voter revalidation exercise.

The directive, issued in an official communication from INEC headquarters, instructed state electoral offices to halt all ongoing publicity and preparations related to the exercise pending further instructions.

The voter revalidation exercise was initially scheduled to begin in April 2026 as part of efforts to update the national voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections. The process was expected to allow eligible Nigerians to confirm and update their voter information.

However, the latest development indicates that the exercise has been temporarily put on hold.

While no detailed explanation has been officially provided, sources suggest that the decision may be linked to concerns over timing, logistics, and the need to ensure a transparent and credible process.

Despite the suspension, INEC has reportedly advised its state offices to continue internal preparations while awaiting a new directive.

As of the time of this report, the commission has not announced a new date for the commencement of the voter revalidation exercise.
