Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu Resigns, Joins Oyo Governorship Race

By Erewunmi Peace

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has resigned from his position in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet to pursue his ambition of contesting the Oyo State governorship election.

Adelabu’s resignation was contained in a letter addressed to the President, in line with constitutional requirements that public office holders seeking elective positions must step down before engaging in political campaigns.

His decision marks a significant development in Oyo State politics as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to reports, Adelabu will be contesting under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he is expected to seek the party’s governorship ticket.

His exit from the federal cabinet opens the way for a replacement in the Ministry of Power, which plays a key role in Nigeria’s ongoing energy sector reforms.

Political observers say his entry into the governorship race is likely to reshape political alignments in Oyo State and heighten competition among major parties.

The Presidency is expected to announce a replacement for the vacant ministerial position in due course.
