Opposition political parties in Nigeria have agreed to present a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, in what appears to be a major step toward forming a united front against the ruling party.

The decision was reached during a national opposition meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State, where representatives of several political parties deliberated on strategies to strengthen their chances in the upcoming election.

The coalition reportedly includes major opposition groups such as factions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), and other allied political movements.

As part of the resolution, the opposition also expressed strong concerns over the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), particularly calling for a review of the position of the current chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan. The coalition accused the electoral body of failing to guarantee full neutrality and transparency in the political process.

According to the communique issued after the meeting, the move to present a joint candidate is aimed at consolidating support and avoiding vote splitting among opposition parties during the 2027 presidential election.

Political analysts say the development could significantly reshape Nigeria’s electoral landscape if the coalition succeeds in maintaining unity ahead of the polls.
