Senator Adams Oshiomhole has called for stronger economic measures against South African companies operating in Nigeria following renewed xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.

Speaking on the matter, Oshiomhole suggested that the Federal Government should consider reviewing the operations of major South African-owned companies such as MTN and MultiChoice (DStv) as part of a broader response to the situation.

He argued that Nigeria should not remain passive in the face of continued attacks on its citizens abroad, stressing the need for a reciprocal response to protect national interests.

The remarks come amid rising concerns over reports of violence and discrimination against foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, which have sparked diplomatic and public reactions in Nigeria.

However, there has been no official government decision to nationalise or suspend the operations of MTN or DStv, and Nigeria is yet to announce any form of economic sanction against South African businesses.

Authorities are instead expected to continue diplomatic engagements with South Africa to address the issue and ensure the safety of Nigerians living in the country.

The proposal has generated mixed reactions among stakeholders, with some supporting tougher measures while others warn against actions that could affect bilateral relations and the economy.

Further developments are expected as discussions continue at both legislative and diplomatic levels.
