LGs to Join Nigeria’s Electricity Market — Adelabu
By Erewunmi Peace
The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has disclosed that local government areas (LGAs) may soon be integrated into Nigeria’s electricity market as part of ongoing power sector reforms.
Adelabu made this known while speaking on efforts by the Federal Government to further decentralise the electricity sector and improve access to reliable power supply across the country.
According to him, the reforms building on the Electricity Act 2023 are designed to allow subnational entities such as states—and potentially local governments—to play more active roles in electricity generation, distribution, and management.
He explained that LGAs could be involved in key areas such as rural electrification projects, mini-grid development, and last-mile power distribution to underserved communities.
The minister added that increased participation at the grassroots level would help reduce pressure on the national grid and improve electricity access in rural and semi-urban areas.
Although the proposal is still part of ongoing reform discussions, it signals a broader shift toward decentralisation in Nigeria’s power sector and greater involvement of subnational governments in energy management.
