Ghana Rejects U.S. Health Deal Over Data Privacy Concerns
By Erewunmi Peace
The Government of Ghana has declined a proposed health partnership agreement with the United States, citing concerns over data privacy and national control of sensitive health information.
The deal, which was expected to provide significant financial and technical support to Ghana’s health sector, reportedly included provisions related to access and use of health data systems.
Ghanaian authorities expressed reservations about the terms of the agreement, particularly regarding the handling and protection of critical national data.
Officials emphasized the need to safeguard the country’s data sovereignty, noting that any international partnership must align with national interests and ensure adequate protection of sensitive information.
Despite rejecting the current proposal, Ghana has indicated its willingness to engage in future discussions, provided that revised terms address its concerns.
The development reflects growing attention among African nations toward data security and the conditions attached to international agreements.
Further negotiations are expected as both parties explore the possibility of reaching a mutually acceptable arrangement.
