Former Kano Governor Ibrahim Shekarau Defects to APC

By Erewunmi Peace

Former Governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant shift in the political landscape of the state.

Shekarau announced his defection on Sunday, April 19, 2026, after consultations with his political associates and supporters. His move comes after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he had been a prominent member.

Speaking during the announcement, the former governor cited internal disagreements and ongoing crises within the PDP as major reasons for his decision to leave the party.

Shekarau, who previously served as governor of Kano State from 2003 to 2011, remains a key political figure in northern Nigeria. His return to the APC is expected to influence political alignments in the state ahead of future elections.

Political analysts believe the defection could strengthen the APC’s structure in Kano while further affecting the PDP’s standing in the region.
