Nigeria No Longer a Safe Haven for Drug Cartels, Says UNODC

By Erewunmi Peace

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has stated that Nigeria is no longer a safe haven for drug cartels, citing increased enforcement efforts and significant progress in the fight against illicit drug trafficking.

The UNODC Country Representative made this known during an official engagement in Abuja, highlighting the growing effectiveness of Nigeria’s anti-narcotics operations in recent years.

According to the agency, intensified actions by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), including arrests, seizures, and successful prosecutions, have made the country less attractive to organized drug trafficking networks.

The UNODC commended Nigerian authorities for their commitment to tackling drug-related crimes, noting that the improved security environment is a result of sustained collaboration between national and international partners.

Despite the progress, the agency emphasized the need for continued vigilance and strengthened strategies to completely curb drug trafficking and abuse across the country.

The statement reflects ongoing efforts by stakeholders to address the challenges posed by illicit drugs while reinforcing Nigeria’s position in global anti-drug initiatives.
