Gumi Reacts to ISIS Commander’s Killing, Says Fighting Terrorists Is a Religious Duty

By Erewunmi Peace

Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has reacted to the reported killing of a senior ISIS commander during a joint operation involving U.S. and Nigerian forces.

Gumi stated that the fight against terrorists is a religious obligation, while also stressing the importance of how such operations are carried out.

He noted that efforts to combat insecurity are necessary, but called for caution in the approach used in dealing with insurgents and extremist groups.

The cleric’s reaction comes following reports of a successful counter-terrorism operation in the Lake Chad Basin area, which targeted a high-ranking member of the Islamic State-linked group.

His comments have generated public discussion, particularly due to his long-standing involvement in conversations around Nigeria’s security challenges and engagement with armed groups.

Security analysts say the development highlights ongoing debates around strategies for addressing insurgency and terrorism in the country.

Authorities have continued to maintain that counter-terrorism operations remain essential to restoring peace and stability in affected regions.
