FG Introduces Drug Testing Measures for Secondary School Students as JAMB Prepares 2026 Admission Cut-Off Review

By Erewunmi Peace

The Federal Government has introduced new measures aimed at addressing drug abuse among secondary school students across the country.

According to education policy updates, the initiative is designed to promote discipline, safeguard student welfare, and curb the rising cases of substance abuse in schools. Under the framework, students in selected institutions may be subjected to drug screening as part of broader school health and safety reforms.

Education authorities explained that the policy will be implemented in phases, with counselling and support systems to be provided for affected students where necessary.

Meanwhile, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is holding its annual policy meeting to determine the minimum cut-off marks for admission into tertiary institutions for the 2026 academic session.

The meeting brings together stakeholders in the education sector, including vice-chancellors, rectors, and other institutional heads, to agree on admission benchmarks for universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

JAMB is expected to announce the official cut-off marks after deliberations at the policy meeting.

Both developments form part of ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s education sector aimed at improving academic standards, student welfare, and institutional performance.

Further details are expected as both the Federal Ministry of Education and JAMB release official guidelines in the coming weeks.
