FG Bans Use of ‘Dr’ Title by Honorary Degree Holders in Official Settings

By Erewunmi Peace

The Federal Government has directed that recipients of honorary doctorate degrees should no longer use the title “Dr” in official, academic, or professional engagements.

The directive, announced by the Minister of Education, aims to address the growing misuse of honorary titles and protect the integrity of academic qualifications in the country.

According to officials, honorary doctorate awards should be referenced appropriately by listing the qualification after a recipient’s name, rather than using it as a prefix.

The government noted that presenting honorary degrees as equivalent to earned academic doctorates could mislead the public and undermine confidence in the education system.

Authorities also warned that misuse of such titles in formal settings may be treated as a form of misrepresentation, with possible consequences.

The move is part of broader efforts to strengthen standards within the education sector and promote transparency in the recognition of academic achievements.

The development has sparked reactions among stakeholders, with some supporting the decision as a necessary step to uphold credibility, while others view it as less urgent compared to wider challenges in the education system.

Further clarification is expected as the directive is implemented across institutions and public offices.
