Benin Elects Wonderland Romuald Wadagni as New President

By Erewunmi Peace

Romuald Wadagni has been elected President of Benin following the country’s recent presidential election.

Wadagni, 49, secured a decisive victory in the April 12, 2026 election, reportedly winning over 90 percent of the total votes cast. His victory marks a transition from outgoing president Patrice Talon, under whom he previously served as Minister of Finance.

The election results were confirmed by electoral authorities, with Wadagni’s main opponent conceding defeat shortly after the announcement.

Despite the landslide victory, the election has drawn mixed reactions from observers. While supporters have described the outcome as a continuation of economic reforms and stability, critics have raised concerns about the level of political competition, citing limited opposition participation in the race.

Wadagni is expected to build on existing economic policies while addressing governance and democratic concerns raised during the electoral process.

His emergence as president signals a new phase in Benin’s political landscape, with attention now shifting to how his administration will navigate both domestic expectations and international scrutiny.
