NNPC Signs MoU with Chinese Firms to Support Restart of Warri, Port Harcourt Refineries

By Erewunmi Peace

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with two Chinese firms as part of efforts to revive the Warri and Port Harcourt refineries.

The agreement is aimed at supporting the completion of ongoing rehabilitation projects and enhancing the long-term operational efficiency of the facilities.

According to officials, the partnership will focus on technical collaboration, investment opportunities, and strategies to restore refining capacity in Nigeria.

The Warri and Port Harcourt refineries have faced prolonged operational challenges over the years, contributing to the country’s reliance on imported petroleum products.

NNPC stated that the MoU represents a step toward establishing a technical and equity partnership, which is expected to drive sustainable operations once finalized.

However, the agreement is still at the preliminary stage and will require further negotiations and approvals before full implementation.

Industry observers say the development signals renewed efforts by the government to strengthen the domestic refining sector and reduce dependence on fuel imports.

Further updates are expected as discussions progress and additional details emerge.
