AfCFTA: NPA Targets Bigger Trade Share as Nigeria Repositions Ports for Continental Market

By Erewunmi Peace

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) is intensifying efforts to reposition the country’s ports to take full advantage of opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The initiative is aimed at increasing Nigeria’s share of intra-African trade by improving port efficiency, expanding capacity, and enhancing overall competitiveness within the region.

According to industry officials, the move involves ongoing upgrades to key port facilities, including improvements in cargo handling, logistics systems, and digital operations to reduce delays and boost turnaround time.

The NPA emphasized that modern and efficient ports are critical to attracting regional cargo traffic and establishing Nigeria as a leading maritime hub in West Africa.

Experts note that while Nigeria has a strategic geographical advantage, sustained investment in infrastructure and streamlined processes will be necessary to compete effectively with other ports across the continent.

The repositioning effort also aligns with broader national goals to strengthen trade, promote economic growth, and reduce dependence on imports.

As the AfCFTA continues to shape Africa’s trade landscape, stakeholders say Nigeria’s ability to modernize its port system will play a key role in determining its level of participation and benefit from the continental market.

Further developments are expected as the NPA continues to implement reforms and infrastructure improvements.
