INEC Clears Chairman Amupitan of Partisan Posts, Moves to Track Perpetrators

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cleared its Chairman, Joash Amupitan, of allegations linking him to partisan social media posts following a forensic investigation.
According to INEC, the probe found that the social media account associated with the controversial posts was fake and did not belong to Amupitan. The commission described the situation as a case of digital impersonation aimed at spreading misinformation.
INEC stated that the posts, which circulated widely online, were fabricated and part of a coordinated attempt to mislead the public and damage the credibility of the commission’s leadership.
Following the findings, the electoral body disclosed that it has referred the matter to relevant law enforcement agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible for creating and disseminating the false content.
The commission reassured the public of its commitment to neutrality, transparency, and the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.
The development comes amid growing concerns about the spread of misinformation and the use of digital platforms to influence public perception ahead of key political activities in the country.
