Agbakoba Says Apapa and Port Harcourt Ports in Critical Condition, Questions Rehabilitation Efforts

By Erewunmi Peace

Human rights lawyer and maritime expert, Olisa Agbakoba, has raised concerns over the condition of Nigeria’s major seaports, describing Apapa and Port Harcourt ports as being in a critical state of inefficiency.

Agbakoba made the remarks while commenting on ongoing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s port infrastructure, noting that the facilities have suffered years of neglect and operational bottlenecks.

He stated that the current state of the ports reflects deep structural challenges that may require extensive reforms rather than routine rehabilitation.

The legal practitioner also referenced recent discussions around international funding support for port upgrades, suggesting that Nigeria’s maritime sector requires stronger and more effective implementation strategies to achieve meaningful improvement.

According to him, inefficiencies at key ports such as Apapa and Port Harcourt continue to affect trade flow, logistics operations, and overall economic performance.

His comments add to ongoing national debates on the state of port infrastructure and the need for comprehensive reforms in the maritime sector.

Meanwhile, efforts by the federal government and international partners to improve port operations through modernisation projects are still ongoing.

Further developments are expected as stakeholders continue discussions on how best to address challenges in the sector.
