South-West States Receive ₦429bn in Three Months as Debate Grows Over Development Impact

By Erewunmi Peace

States in Nigeria’s South-West region received a combined allocation of approximately ₦429 billion from the Federation Account between January and March 2026, according to available fiscal data.

The funds were disbursed through the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), which distributes revenue monthly among the federal, state, and local governments based on established formulas.

Lagos State accounted for the largest share during the period, while other states in the region—including Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Ekiti—received varying allocations.

Although the disbursement reflects routine government revenue sharing, the figures have sparked discussions among analysts and stakeholders regarding how effectively such funds translate into development outcomes.

Some observers have called for increased transparency and accountability in the use of public funds, urging state governments to ensure that allocations are directed toward infrastructure, public services, and economic growth.

Others note that FAAC allocations are influenced by multiple factors, including population, internally generated revenue, and statutory guidelines, and should be considered alongside the broader financial responsibilities of state governments.

As the conversation continues, experts emphasize the importance of prudent financial management to ensure that public resources deliver tangible benefits to citizens.

Further analysis is expected as stakeholders continue to evaluate the impact of government allocations across the region.
