CBN Introduces New Financial Benchmark Rate to Align with Global Standards

By Erewunmi Peace

The Central Bank of Nigeria has introduced a new financial benchmark known as the Nigerian Overnight Financing Rate (NOFR), aimed at strengthening transparency and efficiency in the country’s financial system.

According to the apex bank, the new rate will serve as a reference point for short-term lending between financial institutions, particularly in the overnight money market.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to align Nigeria’s financial market with global best practices, similar to benchmark rates used in advanced economies such as the United States and Europe.

Financial experts note that the introduction of the NOFR is expected to improve price discovery, enhance monetary policy implementation, and boost investor confidence in Nigeria’s financial markets.

While the move has been described as a step toward modernising the country’s financial system, analysts say its success will depend on consistent implementation and market adoption.

The development underscores ongoing reforms by the Central Bank to strengthen the stability and credibility of Nigeria’s financial sector.
