Power Minister-Designate Tegbe Clarifies Remarks on National Grid Reform Timeline

By Erewunmi Peace

Incoming Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has clarified reports suggesting that he promised to completely fix Nigeria’s national grid within three months.

The clarification followed reactions to comments he made during his Senate confirmation hearing, where he outlined plans to address persistent challenges in the power sector.

According to Tegbe, his remarks were misunderstood and taken out of context. He explained that while his administration intends to begin urgent reforms and stabilisation efforts immediately, he did not claim that the country’s longstanding electricity problems would be fully resolved within three months.

He emphasized that the focus during his early months in office would be on improving grid stability, strengthening transmission infrastructure, and implementing policies aimed at reducing frequent system collapses.

The comments had sparked debate online, with some Nigerians questioning the feasibility of completely fixing the national grid within such a short period.

Energy experts have noted that Nigeria’s power challenges are deeply rooted and involve multiple issues, including outdated infrastructure, transmission limitations, vandalism, and funding constraints.

Despite the clarification, Tegbe reiterated his commitment to improving electricity supply and accelerating reforms within the sector.

Further details on the administration’s power sector roadmap are expected in the coming weeks.
