FG Charts New Multibillion-Dollar Energy Development Path
By Erewunmi Peace
The Federal Government has unveiled a series of ambitious multibillion-dollar programmes aimed at transforming Nigeria’s power and energy sectors, with a strong focus on renewable energy, expanded electricity access, and nationwide infrastructure upgrades.
The new strategy, which cuts across power generation, distribution, gas development, and clean-energy expansion, is expected to mobilize over $23 billion in investments in the coming years, according to data from the Ministry of Power and partner agencies.
Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu said the government’s objective is to ensure stable electricity supply, reduce Nigeria’s energy deficit, and attract large-scale private-sector financing into the sector.
$23.2 Billion Energy Access Programme
A major component of the plan is the National Energy Compact, which targets $23.2 billion in investments to boost electricity access across the country. About $15.5 billion of this is expected to come from private-sector investors.
The programme aims to:
Expand national grid capacity
Improve renewable energy penetration
Support clean cooking access
Boost rural electrification and off-grid solutions
Adelabu noted that Nigeria is also aligning its plan with the Mission 300 initiative, a continental programme seeking to provide electricity access to 300 million Africans, with Nigeria expected to play a central role.
National Electricity Roadmap Approved
The Federal Executive Council has approved a new National Integrated Electricity Policy and Strategic Implementation Plan to guide the country’s long-term energy development.
The roadmap provides clear direction for:
Generation expansion
Transmission upgrades
Distribution reforms
Renewable integration
Policy alignment between federal and state electricity markets
1.1 Million Meters to Be Deployed
In a bid to eliminate estimated billing, the Federal Government has secured ₦700 billion to deploy 1.1 million electricity meters before December 2025 under the Presidential Metering Initiative.
The government says the funding — sourced in partnership with development finance institutions — will support revenue transparency and strengthen DISCO operations.
$60 Billion Gas Infrastructure Push
Beyond electricity, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced a $60 billion investment programme to boost gas production, pipeline development, and gas-export capacity.
The initiative positions natural gas as a central pillar of the nation’s energy-transition strategy.
FG: Nigeria Is Entering a New Energy Era
With these combined efforts, the Federal Government says Nigeria is moving into what it describes as a “new energy development era,” poised to attract large-scale investments and significantly improve power supply reliability.
Officials say implementation will be monitored closely, especially in the areas of policy enforcement, funding commitments, and private-sector participation.
