FG Moves to Revive Textile Industry After Sharp Drop in Cotton Production
By Erewunmi Peace
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced fresh efforts to revive the country’s textile industry following a significant decline in cotton production.
The initiative is aimed at repositioning the cotton, textile, and garment value chain as part of broader economic diversification efforts.
According to the Minister of State for Industry, the government is concerned about the sharp fall in local cotton output, which has affected textile manufacturing across the country.
He noted that the revival plan will focus on boosting cotton farming, improving textile production capacity, and supporting garment manufacturing industries.
The government also stated that the initiative is expected to create employment opportunities and strengthen local industrial capacity if fully implemented.
Stakeholders in the sector have welcomed the move, describing it as a step toward restoring Nigeria’s once-thriving textile industry.
The plan forms part of ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to promote industrial growth and reduce dependence on imported goods.
