SWDC Clarifies Rail Licence Is for Operations on Existing Rail Tracks, Not New Construction

By Erewunmi Peace

The South-West Development Commission (SWDC) has clarified that its recently approved rail licence is strictly for the operation of services on existing rail infrastructure, and not for the construction of new railway lines.

The commission made the clarification in a statement following public reactions to the approval of its provisional rail operating licence.

According to SWDC, the licence permits it to run both passenger and freight train services on already existing railway tracks within the South-West geopolitical zone.

The commission emphasized that the approval does not include the development or construction of new rail lines, as widely speculated in some reports.

It noted that the initiative is aimed at improving transportation efficiency, boosting regional connectivity, and enhancing economic activities across states in the region.

SWDC added that it remains committed to working with relevant transport authorities to ensure smooth implementation of rail operations on existing infrastructure.

The development has continued to generate public interest as stakeholders highlight its potential impact on regional trade and mobility.

Further details are expected as implementation plans progress.
