NPA Pensioners Threaten Port Shutdown Over Alleged 16-Year Unpaid Benefits
By Erewunmi Peace
Retirees of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) have threatened to shut down seaports across the country over alleged unpaid pension benefits spanning more than 16 years.
The pensioners, under their association, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the authorities, demanding the payment of outstanding entitlements and the implementation of pension adjustments.
According to the group, the dispute centers on the failure to implement the statutory five-year pension increment, which they claim has not been applied since 2008.
The pensioners warned that failure to address their demands could lead to a nationwide protest and disruption of port operations, a move that may have significant economic implications.
However, the NPA management has denied the allegations, stating that pensioners are being paid accordingly and that there are no outstanding liabilities as claimed.
The situation remains unresolved as both parties maintain opposing positions, with stakeholders closely monitoring developments.
Observers note that any disruption to port activities could impact trade and logistics across the country if the dispute is not resolved promptly.
