NLC Rejects ₦100,000 Minimum Wage Proposal, Says Workers Need Better Pay
By Peace Erewunmi
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the proposed ₦100,000 national minimum wage being considered by state governors, arguing that the figure does not reflect current economic realities facing Nigerian workers.
Speaking on the proposal, NLC spokesperson Benson Upah said rising inflation, fuel costs, electricity tariffs, and the declining value of the naira have significantly reduced the purchasing power of workers across the country.
According to him, the economic challenges confronting Nigerians have made it increasingly difficult for workers to meet basic needs such as food, transportation, housing, healthcare, and education.
He argued that any new wage structure should take into account the actual cost of living and the impact of recent economic reforms on workers and their families.
The comments came after reports that state governors were considering a new minimum wage of ₦100,000 as part of ongoing discussions on workers’ welfare and salary adjustments.
Labour leaders maintain that wages should be tied to prevailing economic conditions to ensure that workers can maintain a reasonable standard of living.
The debate over a new minimum wage has intensified amid rising living costs and calls for improved welfare packages for public and private sector workers.
Nigeria’s current national minimum wage stands at ₦70,000 following the last wage review.
As of the time of filing this report, consultations between government representatives, state governors, and organised labour on future wage adjustments were still ongoing.
