Health authorities in Borno State are battling a major cholera outbreak that has affected thousands of residents across several local government areas.

Officials say the disease has placed significant pressure on hospitals and treatment centres as health workers struggle to cope with the growing number of patients requiring urgent care.

Recent reports indicate that thousands of suspected cholera cases have been recorded since the outbreak began, with dozens of fatalities reported in affected communities.

The hardest-hit areas include Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and neighboring local government areas, where health facilities have experienced a sharp increase in patient admissions.

State health officials have described the situation as a public health emergency and have called for improved hygiene practices, safe water consumption, and proper waste disposal to curb the spread of the disease.

Authorities are also working with development partners and humanitarian organisations to strengthen response efforts, expand treatment capacity, and support vaccination campaigns.

Medical experts warn that cholera spreads rapidly in areas with inadequate sanitation and contaminated water sources, especially during the rainy season.

Residents have been advised to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as severe diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration.

As response efforts continue, authorities say preventing further infections remains a top priority.
